Based on the 1996 video game character, this movie’s version of Lara is a fiercely independent daughter of a missing adventurer who soon finds herself following in his footsteps. Here, she visits her father’s company, which is clearly doing very well even though he is not around to run it.

Lara with her father Lord Richard Croft (played by Dominic West) in happier times. As a child he would teach her about antiquities and puzzles, which will serve her well as an adult.

Lara masters more than one intricate puzzle in “Tomb Raider.” As she concentrates on solving this primitive puzzle, it is clear that Lara is the kind of adventurer who understands the importance of intricate thinking. 

Lara solves a puzzle and is left with a mysterious key inside. This is yet another clue left by her missing father. But what will it open?

Using the key, Lara unlocks something usual in her father’s tomb, which means she is well on her way to a new adventure.

Inside the tomb is a secret study once occupied by Lara’s father. It is jammed packed with files, maps and unusual artifacts.  Even Indiana Jones would be impressed with this explorer’s workaholic office. 

Lara’s father leaves her a video message saying he might be dead but that she has an important mission ahead. Of course, Lara’s father could also just be missing, and a clever Lara could soon be hot on his trail.

Lara’s father’s message urges her to “close the tomb once and for all” to save humanity. Lara will be going up against the Trinity organization for this potentially explosive artifact. 

Lara heads to a mythical island off the coast of Japan, where she’ll find not only the powerful tomb, but also the secret military organization called Trinity. 

Looks like Lara has to figure out a more elaborate cryptex, a combination lock that holds a secret scroll inside.

In pure Lara Croft fashion, she searches for the mysterious island via ship. Here, Lara chats with her skeptical ship’s captain Lu Ren (played by Daniel Wu) about traveling into the Devil’s Triangle to find the island. “Death is not an adventure,” Ren says. 

Look closely and you’ll see a very tiny Lara Croft taking a giant leap from her sinking ship into the ocean during a tremendous storm. This is a call-back to her impressive feats of athleticism in the “Tomb Raider” vide game. 

Mathias Vogel (played by Walton Goggins) is referred to as Father Mathias. In the video game he is a dangerous castaway who creates his own cult. However, in this film he could very well be a member of Trinity.

Luckily, Lara’s ally Lu Ren came prepared … with his trusty gun. This is a new character for the “Tomb Raider” saga and could end up becoming a mentor to Lara throughout the film. 

Of course, this wouldn’t be a “Tomb Raider” movie without the same kind of dangerous elements used in the popular video game of the same name. In this scene, Lara is avoiding being sliced and diced by a multi-pronged death trap. 

Lara Croft is no stranger to guns, and here we see she has her pick in a gun shop. In previous “Tomb Raider” films and video games, Lara has used everything from a machine gun to a crossbow. 

Actor Nick Frost plays a gun dealer and reminds us all in the trailer that you “can’t be too careful these days, the world has gone bloody mad.” While it looks like he only has a very minor role in the film, we know all too well he can hold his own whether it’s against zombies in “Shaun of the Dead” or a corrupt town council in “Hot Fuzz.”

Lara finds her favorite guns and takes two to go. The signature guns used by the Angelina Jolie version of Lara Croft in the 2001 film are Heckler & Koch USP Match with stainless slides.
