‘Star Trek: Discovery’ brings Trekkies and cosplay together

New York Trekkies suited up and crowded into McHale’s Bar & Grill Sunday night for a “Star Trek: Discovery” premiere party. The crowd cheered when the first episode of the CBS show began playing on big-screen TVs and a projection screen, (Disclosure: CBS is CNET’s parent company.)

Miss Star Trek Universe and Mr. ‘Star Trek Dude’

Miss Star Trek Universe 2017 winner Haleigh Ciel gives a Vulcan salute with Michael Nguyen, who describes himself as a “Star Trek dude.”

Fans would cheer as the new show began and scream when it went into commercial break (because those cliffhangers were painful).

Hannah Simpson

Hannah Simpson attended Sunday night’s premiere not just to celebrate new Star Trek show, but because the event was a fundraiser for hurricane relief. 

Simpson recently joined the American Red Cross after having her flight home from Texas rescheduled due to the storm. The couple of days she originally planned to stay in Texas turned into more than three weeks of volunteering. In addition to her Trek shirt, she’s wearing her Red Cross vest and a variety of pins that include the Israeli Pride flag, the Texas flag and Trolls given to her by kids in a shelter.

Meet T’Laura

Laura Kroh is dressed up as her own character, named T’Laura. Her favorite Star Trek series is “The Next Generation,” but her favorite captain is Kathryn Janeway from “Voyager.”
